Update 4

Update No. 4 Tuesday, 7 October 2008

In the context that it is nearly two months since the incarceration of Liliany Obando, PJFC wishes to thank all those peace loving individuals, unions, political and mass social organisations for their solidarity and support. This has been expressed through letters protesting the arrest and incarceration of Liliany as well as demanding her freedom to the Colombian government. Many have expressed their solidarity by passing resolutions and supporting activities organised in the different cities by the local Free Liliany support groups. In particular, we would like to recognise the solidarity of the Australian trade union movement.

Liliany Obando thanks all those people who have expressed their support for her in these very difficult moments of political detention. She calls on us to maintain the pressure on the Special anti-terrorist fiscal 19, NANCY ESPERANZA PARDO BONILLA to grant her home detention that is a right guaranteed by the Colombian legal system, which has been denied to Liliany. We insist that the violation of Liliany's constitutional rights is also a violation of the fundamental rights of her two young children.

As clearly explained by Liliany in her Open letter to the national and international public,1 the denial of home detention is an abuse of the Colombian legal and judicial system. By implementing the orders from the Executive government the values of equity and justice are substituted with defencelessness, arbitrariness, injustice and lies. If we add to this the illegal and selective leaking of information supposedly obtained from the late Raul Reyes' computer files to the local media with the intent to defame and smear we see a system that violates almost every right. This means a just trial cannot be guaranteed.

We call on unions, parliamentarians, academics, political and solidarity organisations and all those peace loving people to:

  • Demand that the Colombian Attorney's General Office grant Liliany Obando home detention to allow her to care for her children.
  • Demand that the Colombian government guarantee the safety of Liliany and her family.
  • Request that Human Rights organisations monitor the safety of Liliany and her family.
  • Support the "Free Liliany Support Groups" in each city and become active.
  • Make a donation towards the legal defence and to support Liliany's mother and children.
