Update 2, Monday 25th August 2008
Dear friends:
It has now been 2 weeks since Liliany was captured and called to give evidence to the judge heading the inquest. Despite the lack of evidence on the alleged charges of "rebellion" and of "administering resources for terrorist activities" a Colombian court ordered detention and her transfer to the "Buen Pastor" women's prison in Bogota.
In any democracy these charges wouldn't have a case to answer, however, in a regime where citizen's rights are compromised this is just an illusion.
It is our understanding that, given the circumstances, the defence legal team applied for home detention to allow her to care for her children. Her detention also violates the basic human rights of her two young children because she is the head of the family. However the court didn't take these circumstances into consideration.
PJFC has learnt that during the police's raid to Liliany's house they also seized passports, photos and other personal belongings of her children and mother. Those seized personal items have nothing to do with Liliany's bogus charges and should be returned. Her legal team has made a request to the court that those items be returned but the court has denied this right as well.
The campaign has to be fought primarily in the courts. PJFC calls on peace loving people to continue putting pressure on the Colombian government, and to send letters of concern to all the international organisations dealing with human rights condemning this continued violation of human and trade union rights in the country.
